13:35:39 From David Forsyth : I’ve finished summarizing the movies (roughly). I think we should move to Q+A? 13:35:50 From Nidia : Can we have the movies for Friday before the office hour so we can engage in discussions in case of needed? 13:35:52 From HEY : Sounds good to me. 13:36:02 From David Forsyth : With luck, I’ll get them on today 13:36:12 From Nidia : Great, thanks! 13:36:31 From David Forsyth : I can hear something, but missed it - do you want to try again? 13:37:27 From David Forsyth : BTW, I’ll be posting homeworks as usual, but I’m aware that some can and some can’t. I’m also aware that deadlines shift, etc. 13:37:49 From David Forsyth : Questions? 13:40:14 From Vardhan Dongre : What will be the Professors’s office hour schedule? 13:40:53 From David Forsyth : I can be flexible. My intention is to be available 13h00-15h00 CST WF BUT not yet sure how this will work for all (time zones complicate things, etc.) 13:41:00 From Xinyu Wu : has the general lecture time been shifted to 1-3pm instead of original one? I'm kind of confused right now 13:42:18 From David Forsyth : No. I had to shift today, but then it occurred to me if I’m posting movies online for the lecture content, we do not need to meet at fixed times. My role going on should be to intro the movies, as here, and be available for questions, etc. I can easily start 12h30 CST if that’s better 13:43:47 From Nicholas Chen : Will you continue making announcements via email rather than piazza? Want to make sure I don’t miss anything important. 13:43:57 From Xinyu Wu : I feel like that works so much better as posting the videos instead. 13:44:04 From David Forsyth : I’ll do email with bcc to all (unless that’s a problem) 13:44:16 From Nicholas Chen : Thanks, I actually prefer email myself 13:44:18 From David Forsyth : Not sure I understand this: I feel like that works so much better as posting the videos instead. 13:44:41 From David Forsyth : i.e you prefer posted videos? or you prefer something else? 13:45:01 From Vardhan Dongre : I would prefer the videos please 13:45:09 From Xinyu Wu : Oh, sorry. I meant instead of meeting at a fixed time, posting movies should be a better choice at least for me. 13:46:39 From David Forsyth : Ok. It seems like a good strategy might be: I’ll do the video posting, and try to be ahead of meetings. At each meeting (12h30-15h00 CST WF going on from today) I’ll do a brief intro to the videos that were posted for the lecture, as today. I’ll record and post that, too. This means that people can be quite asynchronous. 13:47:18 From David Forsyth : And also, it means you can manage without being at meetings, particularly as I can try to make other office hours for people in far time zones, etc 13:47:26 From HEY : Would watching movies/lecture videos from previous semester be useful for learning future contents? 13:48:11 From David Forsyth : Somewhat. I actually have a set of quite closely structured movies used for an online offering. I was going to use those. They stick quite closely to the text. I’ll likely edit in some extra content, too. 13:49:02 From David Forsyth : BTW I do have previous semester movies, and will make available. You’ll find they’re much more talkative than the online offering movies (which some like and some don’t). 13:49:39 From HEY : That will definitely be helpful, thanks! 13:49:52 From David Forsyth : Any comments on strategy, or other suggestions? 13:51:21 From Vardhan Dongre : Since I am more used to of being in a lecture hall and watching 1.5 hr recordings on echo360 I would prefer the longer movies personally over short videos 13:52:03 From David Forsyth : Another natural question is: what will happen about grading? Right now, not all the details are worked out at a departmental level. I think that, for this course, it’s quite easy to be flexible. In the past, most people have done all the homework and have done well (most homeworks are close to full marks or obviously not working). This means that it’s quite easy to move to something that accomodates all needs. I’m waiting for survey responses and dept. policy advice to be sure what that is, but we’ll be OK 13:52:44 From David Forsyth : The one advantage of having done this a bunch of times and never throwing things away is I have a ton of content. I’ll post lots of redundant stuff and let people figure out what works best for them?
