Homework 1: Due 10 Feb 23h59 (Mon; midnight)

As announced on PIAZZA: Due 17 Feb 23h59 (Mon; midnight)

You should do this homework on your own -- one submission per student, and by submitting you are certifying the homework is your work.

Submission: Course submission policy is TBA

Homework submission on Gradescope All homeworks will be submitted and graded through Gradescope. To join the class on Gradescope, go to gradescope.com and enter this code for our class: 9E4DP6

  1. Problem 1

I strongly advise you use the R language for this problem (but word is out on Piazza that you could use Python; note I don't know if packages are available in Python). You will have a place to upload your code with the submission. BUT it's not required.

Do exercise 1.2 in the textbook.

Still waiting for submission instructions BUT gradescope link is https://www.gradescope.com/courses/88920/

TYPO ALERT There is a typo in the textbook; blame the author (AAAARGH!) Where 1.2(a) reads "For attributes describe as 'numeric', which take a small set of values, you should use a multinomial model" it should read "For attributes describe as 'numeric', you should use a normal model." 1.2(b) is OK (I think! sorry!)

  2. Problem 2

    No preference as to language

Do exercise 2.2 in the textbook

  3. Problem 3

This is much easier in R

Do exercise 2.4 in the textbook

  4. Problem 4

This is much easier in R

Do exercise 2.8 in the textbook

  5. Submission:
